Academic Skills Seminars:
EdPowerment works with two underserved government secondary schools to increase student engagement and performance. In Tanzania, Form 2 (roughly 10th grade) and Form 4 National Exams determine a student’s future educational paths. Students attending poorly resourced schools often fail to score the points needed for either college or A Level (Advanced Level High School that precedes university studies) admission. If students could achieve the requisite points in different subjects, government colleges are a possibility, even for poor families.
At Dahani and Msitu Wa Tembo Secondary Schools, EdPowerment provides:
- Study skills coaching in areas such as note-taking, memory tools and time management.
- Specific instruction for both students and teachers on exam formats, test-taking strategies, essay writing, practice tests and scoring guides.
- Advice on exam results so that students and their guardians can understand further educational options in this very regimented system.
- Targeted supplementary instruction in key topics.
Saturday Clubs:
At Dahani, located in the Siha District where our programs focus, EdPowerment also sponsors a Saturday Boys and Girls Club. This program delivers education and awareness in a relaxed, informal way, thereby fostering the development of stronger adolescents.
Roughly 100 – 150 male and female students, who otherwise have no organized activities on weekends, join their peers to learn about and participate in programs that teach/include:
- personal governance, self-awareness and emotional intelligence
- career choices and local entrepreneurship
- art projects, agribusiness initiatives, fitness
- environmental and recycling themes
- service projects
Now in its 4th year, the Boys and Girls Club program energizes students in a way that changes attitudes about school. The Clubs promote student engagement, improve academic performance, and encourage positive social participation among adolescents in isolated communities.
